At twilight in Kentucky, as birdsong fades into a chorus of frogs and insects, familiar roads turn uncanny and disorienting. Travelers who lose their way might stumble onto a hidden highway that winds through vast underground caves. The people who inhabit this secret route appear strange at first, but soon feel disarmingly familiar: an aging driver completing the final delivery for a failing antique shop; a young woman repairing obsolete televisions while ghosts linger at her side; a boy accompanied by his giant eagle; a band of robotic musicians; a shadowy power company that seems to reach everywhere; and the fragile communities struggling beneath its influence.
KENTUCKY ROUTE ZERO is a magical-realist adventure in five acts, featuring a haunting electronic score and a collection of hymns and bluegrass standards performed by The Bedquilt Ramblers. Its striking visual style draws inspiration from theater, film, and experimental electronic art as much as from videogame tradition. The result is a tale of impossible debts, abandoned futures, and the persistent human need for connection.
Originally released episodically over several years, this edition includes all five acts and the previously separate interludes. It has also been carefully localized into French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and both European and Latin American Spanish.
