The gameplay primarily consists of navigating through a few mazes, occasionally testing your spatial awareness. While there are no menacing creatures or sudden scares, the game evokes a sense of unease by playing on fears of disorientation, darkness, and confinement. With no user-interface, dialogue, or background music, POOLS relies on immersive sound design to enhance the player’s experience, with audio cues changing based on the environment.
The deliberate absence of traditional storytelling elements allows the game to focus on creating a palpable atmosphere, where the player’s interactions shape the evolving world. Each of the six distinct chapters offers a unique experience, encouraging exploration and discovery in mysterious new settings. Each chapter typically spans 10 to 30 minutes of gameplay, providing a diverse and engaging journey for players.
