Fran Bow is an eerie adventure game that follows the story of Fran, a young girl grappling with a mental disorder and a challenging fate. After witnessing the gruesome and mysterious death of her parents, who were found dismembered at home, Fran flees into the woods with her only companion, Mr. Midnight, a black cat gifted to her by her parents. In the forest, overwhelmed by the loss of her parents, Fran eventually awakens in Oswald Asylum, a restrictive mental facility for children, with Mr. Midnight missing. Following a dream about her beloved cat, Fran resolves to escape the asylum, locate Mr. Midnight, and return home to her sole living relative, Aunt Grace.
The game features a story-driven, creepy psychological horror adventure with unique hand-drawn 2D art style and animation. Players can self-administer medication to unlock a hidden world, aiding in puzzle-solving and object-finding. Various puzzles of differing difficulty levels are intricately woven into the narrative. Additionally, three arcade-inspired mini-games with distinct art styles serve as transitions in the story. Players can interact with and occasionally play as Fran’s pet cat, Mr. Midnight.
